Job Description

Sandhill Telephone Cooperative is a thriving, technologically advanced telecommunications provider serving residential and business members with an array of services that include local phone, long-distance, high-speed broadband, digital television, and security systems.

We are looking for a Network Engineer who will be responsible for assisting with the evaluation, engineering, and design of Sandhill’s voice, data, transport, and special access circuit networks. This position requires a basic knowledge of telecommunications networks to be successful.

Duties

  • Understand general engineering of transport and switching infrastructures.
  • Basic understanding of LAN, WAN, VLAN and VPN operations.
  • Provide knowledge of various network protocols and systems such as TCP/IP, SIP, SONET, Ethernet, ATM and VoIP.
  • Collaborate with third-party carriers and transit providers to resolve off-network issues and plan for network growth.
  • Assist with trouble resolution, including generating and interpreting the results of packet captures for both network and customer specific issues.
  • Serve as an IP network subject matter expert by building strong relationships with colleagues and external vendors.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend appropriate network tools, software, and documentation to assure quality maintenance, monitoring, and network administration of local and wide area networks.
  • Identify opportunities to increase network reliability and reduce costs.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned by management.

Job Related Qualifications

Knowledge & Skill

  • Knowledge of Cisco routers and switches preferred
  • Knowledge of Adtran and Calix access systems a plus
  • Knowledge of IP routing protocols and metro ethernet
  • Knowledge of scripting and deployment of scripts within a network a plus
  • Skill in problem identification and resolution
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Must possess excellent technical communication skills (oral and written), including the ability to effectively articulate complex situations to colleagues with varying degrees of network knowledge.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple work assignments
  • Ability to work irregular hours as needed

Education & Experience

Associate degree or a combination of equivalent certifications and 1 to 2 years work experience in Engineering, Computer Science, or other closely related disciplines.
