Defend Against Cybersecurity Threats

As the number of cybersecurity threats increases, strong defenses become even more important. Once, spelling mistakes might have signaled a scam attempt. Now, the threats are increasingly sophisticated, including the use of the latest digital innovations.

The rise of tools powered by artificial intelligence increases the potential for cybercrime.

According to the FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Report, more than 452,000 complaints were filed last year, up 45% from 2024. Of the $17.6 billion in losses detailed in the report, 39% were the result of data breaches, and another 36% were due to ransomware attacks. The report found that people 60 and older account for 24% of the reported losses.

Phishing and spoofing messages are the most frequent, but the extensive list of crimes detailed in the report includes everything from ransomware to credit card fraud.

Never Click Suspicious Links

If you receive a message purporting to be from a company you do business with containing a link urging you to verify, update or confirm your account, do not click that link. It may take you to a phishing site built to steal your information. If you’re unsure if the message is legitimate, contact the sender directly by phone or through an official website or email address.

Check The Sender

Scammers count on people quickly skimming through their inboxes. Check the email address or phone number carefully. A small typo, extra character or slightly off domain name is a common red flag.

Use Strong Passwords

Using the same password across multiple accounts makes it easier for scammers if 1 account is compromised. Instead, use a password manager app, which encourages the use of long, unique passwords that provide a greater defense. Device operating systems typically offer free options.

Strengthen Security Features

Use spam filters, enable multifactor authentication where available, and keep your devices updated with the latest software and security patches.
